Church of the Heavenly Rest

5th Avenue & 89th Street, NYC

The roughly 150 panels which assemble into the West Window, overlooking Manhattan’s Central Park, were deflecting badly, towards both the interior, and the exterior. Under the massive sheer weight of these heavy panels of huge profile lead and Norman slab glass, painted elements of glass were beginning to be broken. The window was removed, and the panels were treated with flattening, releasing only where necessary, some extensive conservation painting to missing and damaged glass, and the addition of new structural support in the form of interlocking brass bars and fins.
